Yes, your understanding is correct.

Ratio of M:C = 4:3

As per statement 2, C:W = 4:11

Combining them by multiplying first ratio by 4 and second by 3 we get,

M:C:W = 16:12:33

Now, no. of women could have any multiple of 33, so we need to combine information from statement 1 to come to an accurate answer ie. 33

So, C is the right answer.

Just to make sure I understand:

Using the info in the prompt, we have M:C:W = 16:12:33, right?
I think you switched the men's ratio in the final proportion.

On a particular tour at the zoo, the ratio of the number of men to the number of children was 4 to 3. What was the number of women on the tour?

Let the number of men and children be 4x and 3x

(1) The number of women on the tour was less than 40.
Insufficient
Clearly, we can't say what was the total number of women.

(2) On the tour, the ratio of number of the number of children to the number of women was 4 to 11.
Insufficient
Let's say the number of children and women are 4k and 11k. Clearly, we don't know the exact number.

Combining (1) and (2),
11k < 40
k can be 3, 2 or 1 and 4k will be 12, 8, 4 respectively

but the number of children has to be a multiple of 3 so it will be 12 only, thus, k is 3. Number of women is 33.

(C) is the answer
