A furniture store spent $440 to purchase two types of chairs: deluxe and standard. How many standard chairs did the store purchase?

(1) The deluxe chairs cost $70 each and the standard chairs cost $50 each.
(2) The store purchased 8 chairs in total.

Gentle note to all experts and tutors: Please refrain from replying to this question until the Official Answer (OA) is revealed. Let students attempt to solve it first. You are all welcome to contribute posts after the OA is posted. Thank you all for your cooperation!

Assume that the number of delux chairs purchased = d, and the number of standard chairs purchased = s

Statement 1

70d + 50 s = 440

Note, d and s must be positive integers, as they represent the number of chairs

7d + 5s = 44

5s = 40 + 4 - 5d - 2d

\(s = 8 - d + \frac{4 - 2d}{5}\)

The only pair of (s,d) that will satisfy this equation is (6,2)

Hence, the statement alone is sufficient to answer the question asked.

Statement 2

As we do not know know the individual price of the chairs, we can't find number of standard chairs the store purchased.

Option A
