for first 10 sales : he earned 12$ per sale.
After that he earned 16$ per sale in excess of 10.

Option 1:
Sales Today-Sales yesterday =48. We can't really say anything about the Sales of individual days not sufficient

Option 2:
Yesterday he made 10 sales.
we can't say anything about today's sale from yesterday hence not sufficient

1+2 -> from here we get to know about the individual sale contribution of each day and hence this option is sufficient

Hence Option C is correct

A certain salesman earns a flat payment of $12 per sale on sales up to his daily quota of ten sales. If the salesman earns a flat payment of $16 per sale on sales in excess of ten sales, how many sales did the salesman make today?

(1) The salesman earned $48 more for sales made today than for sales made yesterday.
(2) Yesterday the salesman made ten sales.

Hello, could someone help me understand the statement "A certain salesman earns a flat payment of $12 per sale on sales up to his daily quota of ten sales." Does this mean that for every sale he made upto 10th sale, he received $12. At the 11th sale he received $16?

Yes, that’s exactly what it means.

  • For each sale from the 1st up through the 10th, he earns $12 per sale.
  • Once he goes beyond 10 sales (starting with the 11th), he earns $16 per sale for those extra sales.

So for example:

  • If he makes 8 sales, he earns 8 * $12 = $96.
  • If he makes 10 sales, he earns 10 * $12 = $120.
  • If he makes 13 sales, he earns (10 * $12) + (3 * $16) = $168.
