Let the number of shares owned by Bob, Mia and Lou be B, M and L respectively.

Statement 1:

Bob and Mia together own a total of 800 shares.

B + M = 800. Since we don’t know the total shares of all three.

Insufficient

Statement 2:

Bob and Lou together own a total of 500 shares.

B + L = 500

Since we don’t know the total shares of all three.

Insufficient

Combining both Statement 1 and Statement 2, we get

M - L = 300

Since we don’t know the total shares of all three.

Insufficient

Option E

Let stocks of Bob =b, Mia be m and Lou be l
Option 1
b+m=800 we can't say anything about Lou so not sufficient

option 2
b+l=500 again we can't say the exact stocks for Lou from here.

Option 1+2
b+m=800
b+l=500
2b+m+l=1300 (we again can't say anything about the stock count of Lou Hence i feel it should be Option E
