A bowl contains a total of 18 fruit: a apples, o oranges, and p pears. If each fruit in the bowl is one of these types, how many apples are in the bowl?

(1) There are three times as many apples as oranges and two times as many oranges as there are pears in the bowl.
(2) There are 4 oranges in the bowl.

As per the question:

18 = a + o + p

We need to find a ?

Statement 1:

(1) There are three times as many apples as oranges and two times as many oranges as there are pears in the bowl.

apple : Oranges = 3:1 ,

Oranges : Pear = 2:1

apple : Oranges : Pear = 6x : 2x : x. Totally 9x

if 9x= 18, then x = 2.

apple : Oranges : Pear = 6x : 2x : x

= 12 : 4 : 2

Hence, apple in the bowl is 12. Sufficient

Statement 2:

(2) There are 4 oranges in the bowl.

Still we don’t know the value of pear or apple. Hence. insufficient

a+o+p=18
a=?

(1) There are three times as many apples as oranges and two times as many oranges as there are pears in the bowl.
a=3o=6p and o=2p
a+o+p=18
6p+2p+p=18 ; 9p=18 ; p=2
a=6p=6*2=12
Sufficient

(2) There are 4 oranges in the bowl.
o= 4
a+p=18-4=14

need to find apples:
Option 1:
if pears is p then others will

apples :6p
oranges :2p
pears : p

9p=18=>p=2

Sufficient

Option 2 : 4 orange , not sufficient

This is a question which test your ratio skills. The question is asking about the apple. The goal here is which I set for myself that without picking the pen I have to tell the answer. I choose statement B because it is easy to eliminate.
Now for option A, the relationship between apple, pear and orange can be derived. Also now in my mind, I know that I know the relationship, I know the total number of fruits, I can easily tell about the apples. I really don’t need to life pen and actually solve it.

A would be sufficient.
