At a medical convention attended only by pediatricians and general surgeons, 40 percent of the 250 pediatricians in attendance were male, and 60 percent of the general surgeons were male. How many people were at the convention?

(1) The ratio of male pediatricians to female general surgeons was 2 to 3.

(2) There were exactly 150 female general surgeons in attendance.

A medical convention is attended by pediatricians and general surgeon only.

Given that: Number of pediatricians = 250, of which 40% is male .

pediatricians Male = 40%*(250) = 100.

pediatricians Female = 60% * (250) = 150.

Let the number of general surgeons = x

60% of x = Male Surgeons.

40% of x = Female Surgeons.

Statement 1:

(1) The ratio of male pediatricians to female general surgeons was 2 to 3.

100 / (40%x) = 2/3

solving it we get , x = 375.

Hence,  Sufficient

Statement 2:

(2) There were exactly 150 female general surgeons in attendance.

40% of x = 150

x = 375.

Hence,  Sufficient.

Both statements are individually sufficient.

Assuming pediatricians and general surgeons have no intersection, if total x number of GS, 0.6x male, 0.4x female. Now Statement 1 states that 0.6*250/0.4x ratio is something, can find x -- Hence sufficient.
Statement 2 directly gives 0.4x sufficient

Option 1:
male ped/female general surgen =2/3
100/X=2/3
x=150
So 150 Female GS
2/5=150
GS in total will be 75*5=375

So total is 250+375=625
Sufficient

Option 2:
150 Female GS
Similar to option 1 we know 40 % of GS is 150 so 100% will be 375 hence sufficient .

Option D should be the answer
