When we consider statement 2; What if neil cut himself a piece of cake which slightly larger than half, and sam ended up choosing the smaller portion. Coz we know each of them wanted a larger portion of the cake but did sam chose the larger/equal portion of the given portions? we only get the answer for this from statement 1.
So I think the answer should C. (Both together can answer the question)

Two boys, Neil and Sam, were having a squabble about a pastry their father had given them to slice and share; each wanted to have more of the pastry. Their father came up with a suggestion: One of them should slice the pastry in two and the other should choose which piece he wanted. The children agreed to use the suggestion—and also agreed that Neil should slice the pastry. Was each child able to get half the pastry?

(1) The piece Sam chose was at least as large as the other piece.

(2) Neil sliced the pastry such that it would be impossible for him to get less than half of it.

Hi,

I would focus on the wording, it says "...such that it is impossible to get less than half"
Since Sam chooses after Neil cuts, the only way Neil can guarantee he won’t end up with < 1/2 is if even the smaller piece is at least 1/2. That can happen only if the two pieces are exactly equal halves.

Also, there is an error in your mapping to answer choice - if you believe only statement 1 can answer the question on its own then the correct option choice based on your logic should be A).

A) on its own actually doesnt help. Let's say Neil's piece was x, all it tells us is that Sam's is >=x. But we don't know how this x compares to half of the pastry. There could be a case where S: 2x, N: x and that means neither have half so No.
On the other hand, if both have exactly half, it still meets the condition, but the answer becomes yes. So 1) is not sufficient on its own.
