The most important thing to remember for average speed is that it equals \(\frac{\text{total distance}}{\text{total time}}\), NOT the straight average of speeds.
Statement 1:
This gives you the total distance and the total time, so you can calculate the average speed. (You don't need to actually do the calculation, but it's easy enough: 120/3 = 40 miles per hour.) Sufficient.
Statement 2:
This gives you maximum and minimum speeds, but no indication of distance or how long John spent at each speed (or any speed in between). You can't simply take the average of 30 and 50. Many answers are possible. Not sufficient.
The answer is A.
Common dangers with average speed questions include finding the straight average of speeds or overcomplicating the calculation. Remember, \(\text{average speed}=\frac{\text{total distance}}{\text{total time}}\)
