Set A has 20 numbers and B has 40 numbers. Is the range of B greater than 45?
1). The range of A and B combined exceeds 50
2). Range of B is greater than range of A



A = {n1,n2,...,n20} (sorted)
B = {m1,m2,...,m40} (sorted)

Is (m40-m1)>45?

Statement #1
(n20-n1)+(m40-m1)>50 ==> (m40-m1)>50-(n20-n1)
Not sufficient

Statement #2
(m40-m1) > (n20-n1)
Not sufficient

Combined
(m40-m1) = 40
(n20-n1) = 15
(m40-m1)>50-(n20-n1) ==> 40 > 50 - 15 (True)

or

(m40-m1) = 20
(n20-n1) = 15
(m40-m1)>50-(n20-n1) ==> 20 > 50 - 15 (not true)

In these types of DS questions, the 'key' is to think about what you *really* know and what the possibilities are...

Here, one of the sets COULD be all the same number, the two sets MIGHT "overlap" (or not), etc.

We're told that Set A has 20 numbers and Set B has 40 numbers. We're asked if the RANGE of Set B is greater than 45. This is a YES/NO question.

Fact 1: The combined range of A and B exceeds 50.

IF....
Set A = twenty 5s.
Set B = forty numbers between 0 and 60, inclusive
The answer to the question is YES

IF....
Set A = twenty numbers between 0 and 60, inclusive
Set B = forty 5s
The answer to the question is NO
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

Fact 2: The range of Set B is greater than the range of Set A

IF....
Set A = twenty 5s.
Set B = forty numbers between 0 and 60, inclusive
The answer to the question is YES

IF....
Set A = twenty 5s.
Set B = forty numbers between 0 and 40, inclusive
The answer to the question is NO
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
The combined range of A and B exceeds 50.
The range of Set B is greater than the range of Set A

IF....
Set A = twenty 5s.
Set B = forty numbers between 0 and 60, inclusive
The answer to the question is YES

IF....
Set A = twenty numbers between 0 and 20, inclusive
Set B = forty numbers between 20 and 60, inclusive
