1. Not sufficient
as we dont know anything about the low scores.

2. Not sufficient

as we dont know anything about the high scores

together , its still not sufficient

without knowing individual students maximum and minimum, its not possible to find out the difference. hence not sufficient.

Answer is E.

Hi All - I got C. Here was my reasoning:

It asks for the "greatest difference" of any specific student. When I see greatest difference I see largest difference possible. And the largest possible difference = highest score in class - lowest score in class. And when I see "particular student" I see any possible student. While the assumptions do not specify who received those scores, I don't think that is what the question is asking.

I guess the main thing is I am interpreting the question differently - Am I wrong here?

I will try to explain: Suppose there are 3 student in class. YOU, ME and C.
You scored highest=98
Me scored lowest=44
C scored = 50.

You and Me are picked. Greatest difference will be => 98-44= 54.
but suppose You and C are picked. In that case greatest difference will be => 98-50= 48

we don't know two things
1)how many students are there?
2)which two are picked?

Yes, that makes sense. However the question states for a "particular student", not students. I thought we were comparing the scores for one student?

Yes we are but which one? You Me or Me or C or You or C? Question doesn't mention that. So its not sufficient to answer.

What was the greatest difference between the high and low test scores of any particular student in the third grade at PS 11?

(1) The highest test score earned by any student in the third grade at PS 11 was 98.
(2) The lowest test score earned by any student in the third grade at PS 11 was 44.

Funny question is what this one is

Its asking,us:- Jim studies in PS11 school and he took test in 5 subjects {chemistry, physics, english, math and moral science}. He got highest marks in chemistry and lowest in english. How much is the difference in marks of chemistry and english?

(1) The highest test score earned by any student in the third grade at PS 11 was 98.
Insufficient :- tells that one student in the class got 98 marks (This student can be Jim or Bob, or Lisa or Ahmed..etc etc)

(2) The lowest test score earned by any student in the third grade at PS 11 was 44.
Insufficient :- tells that one student in the class got 44 marks (Again that student can be Jim or Tom, or Rajesh or Stephen ..etc etc)

Merge both statements
STILL INSUFFICIENT , WE CANNOT SAY WITH CERTAINTY THAT IT WAS JIM THAT GOT BOTH THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST MARKS IN TWO SUBJECTS RESPECTIVELY, IN THE CLASS

ANSWER IS E

P.S.:- not a good question. Its more about reading and understanding english then doing math.

I agree with the other blog. The way this reads does not state students (plural) it reads student (singular). If this question were in the SC section the question would not be the correct choice. I viewed this as the greatest range of the class, not 3 or 5 students. My background caused a different understanding than the prompt.
