Some students prefer classes with open discussions between the professor and students and almost no lectures. Other students prefer classes with lectures and almost no discussions. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
The classroom lectures and discussions are an important part of a student's life. It is in the classroom that the student gets most of the learning not only about the academic subjects but also about lessons of life. Every person, at some point of time in his life, experiences learnings through lectures and discussions which shapes his intellect. While some students would prefer to have all lectures and no discussions in a class, some would support the opposite. In my view, having no lectures and only classroom discussion is better for two important reasons.
The main reason is that it makes learning a fun activity. When the students participate in classroom discussions, they feel involved and engaged in the learning process. For example, I remember, when I was in doing my undergraduation, in one of our philosophy classes, our professor directly opened the floor for discussion on the topic of Ethics without giving any lecture about it. Though it was something new to us, we gladly accepted this new process. All the students participated in the dicussion about whether one should lie to others for one's advantage. I clearly remember how eager everyone was in stating their viewpoints and how each of us came up with our own personal experiences. This activity helped us to understand important topics without feeling bored. We discussed about it in such a length that when we studied the concept in our textbooks later, it was a piece of cake for us and we finished the topic so quickly. As you can see, the classroom discussion turned a boring topic into an interesting learning activity and justifies its importance.
Another reason is that it helps students to exchange ideas. During lectures, students just receive information and usually don't get a chance to cite their opinions about the topic. Discussions helps them to state their thoughts clearly and understand things better. For instance, I remember, during another philosophy class on the concept of Racism, we participated in classroom discussions. My class was a diverse collections of people from different ethnic groups. When everybody spoke, we got to understand the opinions of Asians, Africans, Hispanics and other ethnic groups. We could relate to their understanding of the topic. Their different thought processes made us realise that we should respect others for the way they are and their background. Also, whenever we had any conflicts and doubts, our professor was always there to resolve them. His knowledge helped us to get a clear understanding of the concept. If we would have indulged only in lectures, we would not have known how our fellow classmates felt in a different country. When some students came up with their experiences of racial discrimination, we felt really bad and promised ourselves that we would never hurt the feelings of others by indulging in any such racial injustices. This experience taught me that the only lecture approach would have been only conceptual and we could not have related to the actual feelings that people hold.
In sum, while some people would prefer all lecture approach, I believe that the no lecture and only classroom discussion approach of learning is highly beneficial.
