Question: At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support.
Answer: word count: 470
There is no doubt that sports and social activities are very important in a college or university. However, this essay will argue that they should not receive equal financial support as classes and libraries. Two reasons will be shown to prove the point. One is that, continual costs of classes and libraries exceeds continual costs of sports and social event greatly. And furthermore, there are additional scope of financing for sports and social activities. However, this is not the case for libraries and classes. The arguments are discussed below.
Firstly, costs associated with libraries and classes can exceed costs of sports and social activities. Usually, social activities requires infrastructure support such as rooms, and light logistics. For example, activities like debate, drama, musical event requires room, sound instruments and light logistics. These are used many times, and thus require less continuous costs. Same goes for sports. The main requirement of sports is playing field for outdoor sports, and indoor facilities for indoor sports. They doesn't require continuous big costs. But this is not the case for library, classes, lab, research etc. Libraries require regular update of books, classes require tools and logistics, especially for science classes. Costs of lab can be high on a regular basis. On universities, the costs of conducting experiments is a big chunk of overall costs. They often require significant logistics support. Thus, the costs of libraries, classes, lab, research is almost always much greater than costs of sports and social activities. And thus, they require much greater support.
Secondly, scope of alternative financing, such as company donation is not same for activities like sports, social events and classes, libraries. Sports and social activities are often sponsored by companies as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility donation. Sports and social activity events often attract large crowd, and companies fund such event to market their product or service. However, in case of classes or libraries, scope of such donation is very limited. Financing a class or lab is not particularly favorable for companies. As a result, classes and libraries usually depends on earnings generated by the university or the government. Thus sports and social activities can exist in a college or university without major financial support. This is true for both local and big universities. As a result, class and libraries require higher financial support than sports and social activities.
So from the discussion above, it is clear that social activities, sports should not receive equal financial support as libraries and classes. For sure they are important part of colleges and universities, that does not means that they require same financial sport. Higher financial support for classes and libraries is justified because of there higher continual costs, and they don't have additional financing support that sports and social activities has. Thus equal finance is not necessary.
