Hi there,
I have done with my GMAT and am switching to TOEFL now. I have two questions:
1. Most of resources advice to read only 1st and last lines of each para. This strategy seems counterproductive after long period of mastering GMAT RC style approach, in which you have to read the whole sentence. Has anyone tried to successfully implement GMAT style reading for TOEFL reading section?
The question appeared because I feel so distracted when I need to "jump" over the text after reading the next question. In the end I don't understand a structure of a given text, can not focus on main idea, and feel a slight mess about what is going on here.
2. As for me, the logic of questions on TOEFL is different: assumptions have to be done even on detail type questions. E.g:
"Weight loss can be the easiest thing one can do to at least reduce the instance and length of apnea during sleep"
According to the passage, sleep apnea
A. kills millions of people every year.
B. causes the sufferer to sleep more heavily.
C. can be eliminated simply by losing weight.
D. is worse when sufferers sleep on their stomachs.
I'm pretty sure that such an option would be at issue on GMAT RC or CR . Reduce and elemenate are not the same. How did you overome such difficulties (if you had them)?

Hi,
first of all, I do think your question is missing an answer choice: E. Nonetheless, this is not an assumption question but inference question. In my entire life (aka all the OGs, Official TOEFL iBT test 5 real test volume 1 and 2, and all the official software) I never came across to an assumption question, maybe one time, maybe.
All this to say, GMAT RC the best strategy is to read the entire passage carefully and one time, otherwise you do not grasp fully the meaning, especially during the reading of the toughest one, BUT this strategy is also powerful for people that have a mid/upper level of standard English for the TOEFL exam. However, for those who have a high level of comprehension can the passage be skipped, reading right away the question and then back to the passage to search for the answer. This is because they are less dense than those on the GMAT exam.
Moreover, the order in which you have to reply the questions, during a TOEFL RC passage, is always the same: usually the first is the main idea, the 2 or 3 inference, the word in context and the question that summarizes the passage itself, and so forth.
I nailed always 100% of the questions during the exam and practice.
