AWA ESSAYS: Analyze Argument
ESSAY QUESTION:
The following appeared in a print advertisement for a dietary supplement:
“According to a recent study, professional bodybuilders who used Train & Gain, a new protein supplement, over the course of three months experienced an increase in measured strength of up to 20%. Since Train & Gain is now available without prescription at all major pharmacies, superior results are no longer limited to professional athletes. Try Train & Gain today and you too can boost your strength and achieve professional-level performance in just a few months.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
YOUR RESPONSE:
argument- according to a recent study,professional body builders gains strength upto 20% using a new protein supplement , train &gain.As this supplement is easily available at all major pharmacies,and no prescription is required to buy it, anyone can gain strength by using it.
premise- professionals gain strength using train & gain.
train & gain is available on all major pharmacies
no pharmacies need a prescription
assumption- train & gain will have the same effect on any individual as it has on a professional body builders assuming both to have same immunity and same level of strengths and weaknessess.
conclusion- therefore any individual can increase strength using train & gain and become professional as do profeesional body builders
the flaw here is in the assumption. since every individual doesnt have the same features as does a body professionals. therefore one cannot for surity say that the conclusion will folllow. professional body builders may be use to taking such supplements which definitely makes their body immune to its negative effects. the same is not true for the individuals who have never taken one ever, and have a weak immune system. therefore the argument falls apart.

The following appeared in a proposal for a high school's annual fundraising event:
"In order to earn the most money for supplemental school programs, we will have larger and more thrilling rides at this year's School Fair, including a ferris wheel that is twice as tall as last year's ferris wheel. In addition, the game vendors will award more expensive prizes and the food stalls will showcase a variety of upscale international dishes. As a result, we will be able to charge a higher entrance fee and the dollar amount we earn via our commission on the vendors' revenues will be higher than it was last year."

YOUR RESPONSE:
the argument claims that to raise more money for supplemental school programs , larger and more thrilling rides including ferris wheel twice as tall as last year's wheel will be added to school fair this year. as a result ,game vendors can increase the entrance fees and thus can have higher revenue than they had last year.
stated in this way the argument fails to mention that increase in the entrance charge would not lead to the decrease in people visiting school fairs. also, it does not mention that the safety level wont decrease by adding more thrilling games.thirdly, it fails to mention that all people visiting the fair are participating in the games at the fair.
the following argument reveals poor reasoning and lack some facts which can weaken the argument.
first, the argument readily assumes that increase in price wont result in decrease in population coming to school fair and playing games.
for eaxmple,last year number of people who participated in various games at the school fair was 1000 in the ratio of children to adults 6:4
the entrance fees for the fair was $ 5 per child and $10 per adult .
therefore the total earning is $ 7000
this year the number of people in the ration of children : adults is 6 :4 and total is 600
price per child is $6 and $10 per adult
therefore total revenue this year is $4560
hence proving my point here i can say that not neccessarily the revenue will increase with the increase of entrance charges unless the population doesnt decrease
the argument would have been more clearer if this assumption would be explictly stated
second, the safety factor wont be jeopardise with the rise in thrilling zone. more thrill more risk. so the assumption considered here must be that people will readily go for the rides inspite of higher risk fators. if it was clearly stated that the risk factor is same as that in last year's ferries then might be this argument would have justified the risk factor.
third and the most strong reason that i find in this argument is people will readily pay the amount increased. might be the same number of people visit the fair but not participate in the games provided because of the higher charges. this leads to the weakening of the conclusion
without the above mentioned key factors the argument remains unsubatsantial and open to debate.
