The argument states that with an increasing demand for high skilled labor, the nation will soon see a shortage in the workforce.
Stated this way, the argument manipulates the facts and gives a distorted view of the situation. It also fails to mentioned several key factors on the basis of which the argument could have been evaluated. The conclusion of the argument heavily relies on the assumptions for which there are no clear evidences. Hence the argument is weak and unconvincing.
Firstly, the author states that new positions in the technical and professional occupations are increasing rapidly.
This statement is a stretch because the author does not provide the number or percentages of increased positions.
The argument could have been considerably strengthened if the author provided information on the nations population and increased percentage of the positions.
Secondly, the author readily assumes that the total labor force is growing slowly.
This statement is weak because the author does not provide the demographics of this nation. The nation could be growing slowly compared to last year or the nation could be growing slowly compared to other nations.
The author could have considerably sretenghted this argument by providing correlations or examples of the rate of growth of the total labor force.
Thirdly, the author states that the government if proposing to cut funds that aid education in the near future. Again, the statement is weak because the government is only proposing a plan. It has not been implemented yet. Moreover, there is no information how education supplements candidates with high skills.
Wihout clear exmaples, on if left with the impression that the argument is more of a wishful thinking rather than substantive evidence.
In conclusion, the argument is flawed for the above-mentioned reasons and hence is unconvincing. The argument could have been considerably strengthened if the author had provided all the relevant information. In order to access merit of a situation, it is essential to have full knowledge on all the contributing factors. Wihtout this, the argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.
