“Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for more than 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers—some say because its product lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American-made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness, and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine-roar on the sound track.”
My Writing:
This argument on why the foreign company is not attracting motorcycle X customers for their copied version of the motorcycle is extremely incomplete. While it brings up a few explanations, it misses many other reasons that can help bring the argument to a conclusion.
The first reason that the foreign company may not be attracting motorcycle X customers is that these customers have already purchased their motorcycle. The argument does not address this point and fails to realize that there could be a connection between motorcycle X customers and the number of motorcycles they purchase. If they were to look at how many motorcycles each customer owns, they may realize that a large percentage of their customers only own one motorcycle and thus will not be interested in the foreign company to purchase an additional motorcycle. Second, the argument does not consider the possibility that there could be additional fees that are realized after initial interest. If motorcycle X customers go to the foreign company to purchase a motorcycle because it is cheaper but end up realizing that it will cost them more than motorcycle X after extraneous fees and charges are added, they may become disinterested and stay with motorcycle X in the US. Third, motorcycle X is not considering quality of the motorcycle and customer service at either company. It could be that the motorcycle quality of motorcycle X is significantly higher than the foreign company and that their customer service is significantly superior. These are factors that would draw customers away from the foreign company as people will not want to purchase a motorcycle of lesser quality or from a company with poor customer service.
In conclusion, while this argument points out a few items that may explain the inability of the foreign company to attract Motorcycle X customers, it overlooks many relevant points in creating an effective argument. These points include the number of motorcycles people purchase, potential additional fees and charges at the foreign company, and the overall quality of the motorcycle and customer service at each company.
