Can somebody please evaluate my essay.
The following was excerpted from the speech of a spokesperson for Synthetic Farm Products, Inc :
“Many farmers who invested in the equipment needed to make the switch from synthetic to organic fertilizers and pesticides feel that it would be too resume synthetic framing at this point. But studies of farmers who switched to organic farming last year indicate that their current crop yields are lower. Hence their purchase of organic framing equipment, a restively minor investment compared to the losses that would result from continued lower crop yields, cannot justify persisting on an unwise course. And the choice to farm organically is financially unwise, given that it was motivated by environmental rather than economic concerns”.
Discuss how well reasoned..etc.The above argument states that the farmers who invested in the equipment needed to make a switch from synthetic to organic fertilizers and pesticides. Further, the studies showed that the farmers who switched to organic farming had experienced lower crop yields. Also it has been stated that the investment in organic framing equipment was a minor investment in comparison with the losses that would result from lower crop yield. So, it was considerably an unwise decision. As mentioned that it was encouraged by environmental rather than economic concerns.
Firstly, the author is considering it only from one perspective of the problem. As nowadays, organic products are preferred over synthetic products . Not only this, from the health point view organic farming is totally safe from harmful chemicals, since the method only involves crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control. It has proven that people who purchase organic products over inorganic would move towards longevity.
Secondly, Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods. Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. So, considering all pros and cons one should take into consideration that environmental benefits should be preferred over economic concerns.
Lastly, the author has mentioned in the above statement that production has been adversely effected due to organic framing which is completely a baseless statement as there could be other reasons behind low yield . Likewise, there could be scarcity of water supply or could be seeds which were sown by farmers were not of good quality etc. So, just because the yield was not good the author cannot put the entire blame on the method adopted by the farmer.
In summarization, the argument made by the author has serious flaws through erroneous reasoning. Had the argument provided more information about a wider area. Nonetheless, the argument stands ill-founded based on the points mentioned above and doesn't hold much weight for the common reader.
