Hi all!
Here is my first attempt at doing a practice AWA. I tried to stay true to the constraints of the test and only gave myself 30 mins, to read the prompt, organize my thoughts, and write the essay. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Prompt:“Two of today’s best-selling brands of full-strength prescription medication for the relief of excess stomach acid, Acid- Ease and Pepticaid, are now available in milder nonprescription forms. Doctors have written 76 million more prescriptions for full-strength Acid-Ease than for full-strength Pepticaid. So people who need an effective but milder nonprescription medication for the relief of excess stomach acid should choose Acid-Ease.”My essay response to the prompt:The premise that people should choose the nonprescription versions of Acid-Ease over Pepticaid for mild cases of excess stomach acid has several holes. These holes include several claims which warrant further evidence in order to be considered viable as well as the use of vague language.
Based on the passage, it indicates that the use of Pepticaid is not as effective as Acid-Ease because doctors have written 76 million more prescriptions for full strength Acid-Ease. While this could be true, there are several pieces of information needed to substantiate this assumption. The first being what is the time frame that these prescriptions were written? If Acid-Ease has been around for decades and Pepticaid has only been in the market for the past couple of years, this could be a reason why more doctors have written more prescriptions for Acid-Ease. Now if this was based on the past two years, and both drugs were in the market, this statement would be stronger.
Another assumption made is that the milder version of Acid-Eases’ success would correlate to the success of the full strength version. Because these are different products, there is no correlation as to why the success of one will determine the success of the other.
Lastly the article uses vague language at the beginning of the prompt. It says that both antacids are top selling medications. What does top selling mean? Over what period is this top selling claim based on, and how many brands are they up against in this category? I find it peculiar that a top selling brand is not recommended. If so, does this drug have other uses than what it’s intended for. This is critical information we need.
If there was factual information included in the passage to back up several of the claims, this argument would be stronger.
