AWA PromptAdvertising the reduced price of selected grocery items in the Daily Gazette will help you increase your sales. Consider the results of a study conducted last month. Thirty sale items from a store in downtown Marston were advertised in the Gazette for four days. Each time one or more of the 30 items was purchased, clerks asked whether the shopper had read the ad. Two-thirds of the 200 shoppers asked answered in the affirmative. Furthermore, more than half the customers who answered in the affirmative spent over $100 at the store.”This argument states that grocery stores in the Marston area should advertise the reduced price of selected grocery items in the Daily Gazzette to increase their sales. This conclusion is based on the results of the study that was conducted last month in which Two-thirds of the 200 shoppers answered in the affirmative sense upon being asked by the clerks of a store in downtown Marston which has advertised the thirty sale items in the Gazette for four days, whether they have read the ad. However there are various assumptions that are required to be discussed to validate the soundness of the conclusion of the argument.
Firstly, the argument assumes that the affirmative responses of Two-thirds of only those 200 shoppers who were asked by the clerks whether they watch the ad is enough to conclude that ad has helped in the higher sales. However, it could be possible that the number of those shoppers who haven’t watched the ad and bought the grocery items from the store in downtown Marston is significantly larger than those 200 shoppers. In this case, it can’t be clearly inferred whether the ad has made significant impact on influencing the buying decision for shoppers.
Secondly, the argument also assumes that more than One-third of those 200 shoppers spent over $100 during four days of advertisement in the Gazette and this represents a significant profit to the store in downtown Marston. However, it can’t be substantiated from this case that ad has made significant impact in the profit of the Marston store as it could be possible that the amount that Gazette has charged for four days of advertisement is comparable to the profit that was made by the Marston store from the shoppers who have bought the grocery at reduced price after watching the ad.
In conclusion, it can be said that there are various assumptions as mentioned above which might not be applicable in this argument. Therefore, It can’t be clearly deduced from the argument in its present form whether the advertisement in the Gazette will really help in increasing the sales of grocery stores for selected grocery items.
