Question
The following appeared as part of an article in the business section of a local newspaper.
"Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers—some say because its product lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American-made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness, and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine-roar on the sound track."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. My AWA:
The article about the sales of Motorcycle X and its foreign counterpart is deeply flawed in its argument that sales of the copy are less than those of Motorcycle X due to its loud noise.
The article states that the foreign copy of Motorcycle has a much lower price however not so many sales. Just stating that the price is “less” is extremely vague. It isn’t clear how much lesser is the price compared to Motorcycle X. Even 10 dollar or 100 dollar price difference can be deemed “less” but does not make a significant difference when the sales of the bike are attributed to the price point. Clearly defining the price difference might help to better deduce the reason the foreign company has failed to attract customers.
Motorcycle X is said to have an exceptionally loud noise which the foreign copy lacks to implement. But a loud noise cannot be the only reason a customer is inclined to purchase certain motorcycle. There might be several reasons why Motorcycle X is a much superior product including better aesthetics, a larger tank which fuels a longer ride and lesser maintenance costs to list a few. In fact the traffic departments in many countries are encouraging manufacturers to produce lesser noisy bikes and cars in order to control noise pollution in cities.
People usually prefer german car brands like BMW, Audi and Mercedes not only because they’re quieter but also because they’re overall better cars and have longer durability. To a customer, the purpose of purchase of a car and a bike might be completely different and hence cannot be compared. A car can occupy atleast 4 people and is much safer to drive than a bike. Also the noise of a car ranks well behind in a list of factors to be considered before purchasing one. Therefore, this attribute of foreign-made cars cannot be used to evaluate the comparison of American and foreign-made bikes.
Lastly, as stated in the article, the advertisements for Motorcycle X highlight its other factors like durability and aesthetics which if considered by the foreign company may help to improve its sales. At times a louder noise might help to attract the attention of onlookers towards the bike and might be a factor to be considered.
