AWA Prompt"In general, people are not as concerned as they were a decade ago about regulating their intake of red meat and fatty cheeses. Walk into Heart's Delight, a store that started selling organic fruits and vegetables and whole-grain flours in the 1960's, and you will also find a wide selection of cheeses made with high butterfat content. Next door, the owners of the Good Earth Cafe, an old vegetarian restaurant, are still making a modest living, but the owners of the new House of Beef across the street are millionaires."
My replyThe argument states that people are not much concerned now as they were a decade ago about regulating their intake of red meat & fatty cheeses. This conclusion is based on various assumptions which might not be applicable in this case. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss those assumptions to check the soundness of the argument.
First, the argument assumes that the store that started selling organic fruits and vegetables and wholegrains in the 1960’s is now also selling a wide selection of cheeses made with high butterfat content because a lot of customers are buying these cheeses. However there is no description given about the quantity of cheeses being bought. It could be possible that total quantity of cheeses being bought per week now on an average is not significantly higher than the total number of cheeses that were bought a decade ago. Moreover, it is also possible that because of technological advancement, a variety of cheeses can be manufactured now as compared with the varieties a decade ago. It could be the reason for availability of wide selection of cheeses with Heart Delight store.
Second, the argument also assumes that people are now consuming a lot of Beef and that is why the owners of the new House of Beef are millionaires, however the owners of the Good Earth Café are still making a modest living because it is still a vegetarian restaurant. However this assumption is not logically sound. The reason that the owners of House of Beef are millionaires could also be that they also have some other venture through which they are making a lot of profit and the profit that they are making from the House of Beef is not as high as is made by the owners of the Good Earth Café. As there is no comparative figure stated in the argument about the profit that is made through the House of Beef and Good Earth Café, no proper conclusion can de drawn.
In conclusion, it can be said that there are various loopholes in the assumptions and the conclusion that was drawn based on those assumptions, some of which are mentioned above. Had the argument clearly described the comparisons about consumption of cheeses or the profit made by the House of Beef and the Good Earth Café, it would have been easy to conclude the argument rationally. Therefore, the argument in its current form is still inconclusive based on the facts given and is still open to further discussion.
