Hi. My exam is on 26-May-2023
Request you to provide your inputs on my AWA essay
Here's the prompt - The following appeared as part of a column in a popular entertainment magazine:
“The producers of the forthcoming movie 3003 will be most likely to maximize their profits if they are willing to pay Robin Good several million dollars to star in it—even though that amount is far more than any other person involved with the movie will make. After all, Robin has in the past been paid a similar amount to work in several films that were very financially successful.”
Here's my answer:
The argument claims that they would most be likely to maximise their profits if they are willing to pay Robin Good several million dollars to star in it. Stated in this way, the argument:
1. Manipulates facts and conveys a distorted view of the situation
2. Reveals examples of poor reasoning
3. Fails to mention several key factors on the basis of which it can be evaluated
The conclusion of the argument relies on assumptions for which there is no clear evidence. Hence the argument is unconvincing and has several flaws
Firstly, the argument assumes that the producers will maximise profits only if they pay several million dollars to Robin Good to star in it. The reasoning provided to support this argument is that Robin Good has been paid a similar amount to work in several films that were very financially successful. However, this does not establish an appropriate cause effect relationship between the profit maximisation of the film, and paying millions of dollars for Robin Good to star in it
Secondly, the argument poorly reasons that Robin Good should be paid several million dollars to star in the movie just because he has been paid a similar amount to work in several films that were very financially successful. It fails to consider the profits that could be earned by casting another actor, who would charge far less than Robin Good. In such a case, the producers might be able to make even more profits, since the cost of creating the movie might be lower. Additionally, the argument has not considered the films where Robin Good has been paid a similar amount but which were not financially successful. An analysis of the same should be done in order to arrive at a reasonable conclusion
Finally, the magazine claims that the only way the producers can maximise profits is if Robin Good stars in it. However, by claiming this, it is ignoring all the other elements that make a film successful, such as cinematography, direction, story, script etc.
In conclusion, the argument is flawed due to the above mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing. In order to assess the situation in which the profits will be maximised, we need to have all the facts as mentioned above. Without this information, the conclusion remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.
