Is a Master's in Finance & and a MBA with a concentration in Finance overkill?
Just some background on me.
I have a degree in Biological Sciences (GPA 3.4), and have taken quite a few business classes (GPA 3.8). I don't have any work experience post graduation that is relatable to business, the only thing that would be transferable is some supervisory experience during my time in school.
My thoughts at the moment are that I need to get a Master's in Finance in order to break into the business world. Work a few years, then return to an MBA program nearby to network and move up the company ladder. The MBA programs nearby are pretty low cost, while still reputable for the area. Is this too ambitious? Or should I consider doing a joint MBA/MSF?
I haven't started studying for the GMAT yet. I've been out of school for about a year now... so I took a practice GMAT and scored 600. I'm hoping that I can get up in the 700 range with some studying(I didn't remember anything from the quantitative section).

IMO, I would do an MSF if you really want to work in finance and cannot network or find an entry route into the industry. Look at F500 corporate finance, commercial banking, valuation groups, accounting, something like that. All these fields can be leveraged into something more "finance" related such as investment banking or equity research.
If you did an MSF I would suggest you concentrate in something else for your MBA. If you want to go into finance post MBA it really is all about the brand name of the program. You don't necessarily have to student finance in an MBA program to get a finance job (assuming you have a finance education or background).
You can also look at Masters in Management programs (Duke, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Michigan) as they will provide a more general business education. This will allow you flexibility in career path and you can student finance during your MBA if that is the route you truly want to take.
