Hello every one

Could you please help me evaluate my profile and suggest some master programs in finance I should apply for? I want to apply for the Fall 2015.

Education: Currently 4th year student at Foreign Trade University, Vietnam. Major in Business Administration. This is the best business school in Vietnam but it does not rank high in the university ranking and there is no reputation in US. Anticipated graduation: July 2015
GPA: 3.95/4
GMAT: 700 (Quant 50, Verbal 34, IR 7, AWA 6)
IELTS : 7.6 (L 7.5, R 9, W 6.0, S 6.5)
Aim: Master in finance
Work experience: 6 months part-time job in (non-related to finance)
Extra-curricular activites: head department of two clubs
Awards: nearly 10 scholarships by university and other coporations; first place in university's student scientific research competition; one published article in the school's scientific journal (non-related to finance)

Based on the information above, which master programs in finance you would like to suggest to me? In addition, can I apply for any scholarship for master in finance?

And one last question, in compare with master in finance in Brandeis International Business School and master in finance in University of Souther California, which would you prefer and why?

Thanks and Best regards

Hoang

I think USC is going to snub you because of the school. That being said, I think it is worth a shot applying. Consider that your within range stretch school. Apply to Illinois. They are fine with international students and the program is respected in the US and known internationally. Brandies is fine as well. It is going to be "weaker" when it comes to recruiting in the US, but it will have ok Boston connections. Maybe check out some other big university schools (OSU, Maryland). You are going to want a handful of applications so you can see which school is the best value.

And yes, apply for scholarships and fellow ships.

Thanks MSFHQ for your comment. I may not understand the MSF game plan, so could you please show me which is the biggest reason that USC would refuse me? I checked out the class profile of USC and found out that I meet its median GPA, GMAT, IELTS. However, I have no working experience. So solely because of this reasons, I will not be accepted to USC?

I think you should apply without a doubt. My point is that I have a suspicion, from what I have been told and what I have seen, that USC has a focus on brand. Here are some of the schools they admitted kids from:

University of Southern California
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Columbia
Cornell
US Naval Academy
Johns Hopkins
Duke
Vassar
Cornell
New York University

All of those schools are top US schools. Big name schools. As you mention, your school isn't well known in the US. I think that might be the hiccup. Now this isn't an absolute, just my opinion from what I have seen and heard. I think you should apply, but I also think you should have a back up plan. That is all I was trying to say.

Hi MSFHQ

I have one more question and expect for your advice. The above suggested school from you are very good; however, I would classify it as Reach or Dream schools. Can you please suggest me some good Safe schools? I want to study MSc in finance in Fall 2015 any way.

Many thanks!

You have great stats. The only schools I think would maybe be a reach are MIT and USC. Everything else is well within reach.
