Alright, so I'm applying to MSF programs now and I am starting to get really pessimistic about my chances. I scored embarrassingly low on the GMAT Quant section (34... 610 total score) and I feel that this is going to really hurt me in the admissions process. The thing is, I'm an Applied Math major at a top liberal arts school with what would be a near 3.9 GPA in my math courses (hard to really get an exact figure, since my school doesn't have GPAs... I'm just going off of test scores). These courses include Calc I-III, Linear Algebra, ODEs, PDEs, Mathematical Statistics, Numerical Methods, Nonlinear Dynamics, Mathematical Methods for Quantitative Finance, Networks and Graph Theory, and Complex Systems (among others). I have applied to five schools: Bentley University, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Villanova, and WUSTL. I just found out that I have been waitlisted at Vanderbilt, so that has really put a damper on my spirits. My undergraduate record is nigh perfect and my extracurriculars are very strong. What are my chances at the other schools? Is it only my GMAT score that's bringing me down?

In at Nova because Nova is more understanding of lower GMAT scores. I mean honestly, you have a great GPA from a top school in a hard major. Who really cares about the GMAT in this case. Sadly, a bunch of schools will. WUSTL is going to be tough with that score. BC might be more flexible, but still tough. I'd apply and get into Nova and maybe Bentley (if you really love Boston). Then you can use the Nova admit to try and get Vandy to budge of just go to Nova.

You could also reach out to the Vanderbilt people and see if they'd let you in with a higher GMAT and then retake it if you thought you could do better. Up to you.

Hey, thanks for the reply. If it comes down to it, is Nova or Bentley the better pick? Obviously Nova has the more reputable program and places well in Philly/NYC... but I'd much rather live in Boston, and I know that Bentley tends to have very good placement (as far as getting a job) in the greater Boston area. But then again, I would really like to get into IB... something I don't think Bentley is especially known for, as far as placements go. So many variables...

If you want to live and work in Boston then I would go with Bentley or at least try and get into BC. Maybe talk with them one on one and see if there is some way you can maybe do the PT program as I think that has a lower admissions bar. This will allow you to network and intern/work during the day.


I always tell people to go where they want to live and work. If you want Cali, go Claremont. If you want to work in the South, go Vandy. Don't try putting a square peg in a round hole.

That being said, I would say that Philadelphia seems like it might suck, but the city is pretty vibrant and awesome. Much bigger than Boston. I'd take a trip and stay downtown and really feel it out. Nova is going to have more career options than Bentley so really decide how much going to school in Boston is worth it. But if it is what you want then 100% go to school there.

Your GMAT is within their 80th percentile for the FT. I think you'd make up for it with your GPA which is above their average. You'd 100% get into the self paced program. Both will give you the same degree.

Yeah, I'd definitely choose BC over Bentley. I'm just looking at this in a glass half empty kind of way. Don't want to get my hopes up too high... again. I'm hoping that I can get into contact with someone from the BC admission's team before they reach a verdict on my app. I guess I timed this pretty poorly, what with winter break and all. Thanks again, though. Really appreciate your input.
