Hi everyone,

I am a third year student at a Singapore university currently pursuing an undergraduate degree (4 year program) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. I am considering the possibility of applying to a Masters of Science Program in either Finance, Business Analytics or something similar right after I graduate. My ultimate aim after 3-5+ years of work experience is to also gain an MBA.

I wanted to know if it is better for someone to do MS Finance after undergrad and an MBA later on. Or just pursue an MBA after gaining work experience. I am targeting the top 20 schools for MS Finance. I plan to give my GMAT this December.

Before I make the decision to start preparing myself for MS, I want to make sure that I am making the right decision.

Thanks & Regards,
Manickam

If you are going to do an MSF, do it before, not after the MBA. Most MSF students tend to have a lot less experience than MBA's and also be a lot younger. I've seen too many (mainly international) students with MBA's try and do an MSF and have a hard time getting in or explaining this to admissions. It just looks odd.

My question is does MSF + MBA better or just a MBA after some years of work experience better? How hard is it to move to a job in the finance sector after a Bachelors in Engineering?
Thanks MSFHQ!

I think the MBA is still the main degree to have. The issue is does your work experience and background enable you to get into a top program. Don't just get an MBA for the sake of having it. And don't try and do an MSF after you have your MBA done. It will cause you problems with getting admitted.

If I were you, I would try and position myself into some type of analytics or credit risk field at a bank. This will allow you to try and move around internally and if that doesn't happen, you'll have a good bank on your resume for later when you want to apply. If you get a top 20 MSF in the US it might help you with a domestic brand name and network. It is going to be hard to get a job in the US with an engineering degree from India, while residing in India.
