Hey guys, I recently graduated from UCF with a B.S. in Economics. I'm looking into breaking into either IB or a Junior analyst position at a HF.

Stats:

Cumulative GPA: 2.7 (weak, I know. Just jumped around majors a lot and didn't do well in my classes with >1000 students.)
Major GPA: 3.2 (2 Econometrics courses, Financial Derivatives, Money and Banking, International Macro & Micro, Intermediate Macro & Micro)
GMAT: 760 (could do better if needed)
Internship: small capital management firm. Did some financial modeling and ER. Have an opportunity at a small data analytics firm as well. (founded by a friend)
Other Experience: Restaurant jobs, Car sales, Drafting.

Schools I'm considering:

MIT
University of Texas
Vanderbilt
University of Chicago
VIllanova
NYU
Columbia


I'm open to other suggestions as well. I'm not really interested in any Florida school. I'm looking to start applying next calendar year, so I have time to work on beefing up my profile/taking some math classes at my local state college. I know my GPA is terrible and my experience isn't too strong either. I'm hoping my GMAT scores will help me out, but I can probably get a 780+ if I take it again. I've been a citizen my whole life.

The one thing I know for sure is that 760 is absolutely more than sufficient. If you take it again, adcoms might think you're crazy. You're intelligent enough and it'll make up for your lower GPA. A 760 in the Gmat will absolutely make it reasonable for them to blink at your GPA. The one thing you could mention here is your Verbal/Quant split. If you're 48-51+ on the quant side, you're pretty safe. I can't give any specific advice but I know you should be focusing on other aspects of your profile. GPA is low. GMAT is high. Your internships are nice and being a citizen helps.

IMO, Villanova is probably the only school on the list you'd get into. Ohio State would be a good option as they have finance placements, a well known brand and you could get in with that profile. John Hopkins would be a safety.

As for career goals, I would go into these programs with a healthy dose of realism. Look at F500 rotational programs, valuation jobs, credit analyst gigs, etc. Obviously banking is obtainable, but look at BB, MM, regionals and boutiques. Hope this helps.

Hey there,
Here are some pointers regarding your profile:

Your GPA could be a problem, but that can be compensated by highlighting your other profile strengths. Just check out which of your target schools have a minimum GPA requirement, that could help you narrow down your ideal list of target schools.
Also, if you have a relevant reason for your low CGPA, make sure to highlight it properly.
Your essays will play an integral role in showcasing these reasons, so make sure that you are spending enough time on them.

Your GMAT Score is pretty impressive, and is above the average requirement of many top-schools. I would strongly advise you to NOT retake your GMAT, any increase in your score would be marginal.
Instead, work on other aspects of your profile like your work experience, extra-curriculars,Social volunteering, learning new languages, etc.

Financial internships are definitely helpful. Since you do not have a big brand on your resume, focus on highlighting the learning and accomplishments of your work experience.

As far as your target B-Schools are concerned, universities such as MIT and columbia are highly competitive and can be considered under the dream category of your target schools.
But the others can be listed under the competitive category and are definitely worth targeting. A set of well crafted essays which explain your motivations for the degree, how your target B-School and its program will help you get closer to your long-term & short-term goals should get you an admit into your priority schools.
