Dear all,
In the next 4-5 months, I will be applying to various MSc in Finance programs and the likes (Class starting Fall 2019) and would very much appreciate your thoughts on my odds of admission and, perhaps more importantly, scholarships/fellowships. So here goes:
Demographics: 19-year-old Vietnamese male
Undergraduate: 3-year Business Administration/Economics, with emphasis on Finance, from Aalto University - supposedly No. 1 Business School in Finland. I'm currently on exchange at the National University of Singapore, doing entirely Mathematics modules (to be specified below).
GPA: 4.97/5 ~ 3.9 or 4.0 on US Scale, 2nd best (top 2%) of my cohort, Dean's list
GMAT: 760 (Q50, V42, IR 8, AWA 6)
Extracurriculars are only average: Member of Investment Club, participated in a Business Case Competition.
And presumably the weakest link: (relevant) work experience - 3-month Brokerage/quasi-Equity Research internship at one of Vietnam's largest securities firms/investment banks. I have only had 1 summer off during my undergrad so
up to now, this is the best I could have done quantity-wise.
Courses: Business Mathematics, Intermediate courses in Finance, Accounting & Economics. These are not terribly quantitative, hence the following courses at NUS: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra II, Mathematical Analysis II, Mathematical Finance I, Probability (Also because I simply love math)
I intend to apply to (more or less in order of preference):
1. Oxford MFE. Probably a bit crazy, but should I retake GMAT to get the recommended Q51 (>90th percentile)?
2. LSE MFin
3. SSE MFin
4. Bocconi MFin
5. CBS MSc Advanced Economics and Finance
6. Rochester MFin. Given the work experience, only applying cause there is no application fee.
7. NUS & SMU (Singapore). Supposedly offer the best post-graduation job prospects for me, but taking up a hefty, risky student loan is seemingly inevitable. Still very torn about these.
My goal: More research-oriented roles, quant preferred (Personality-wise, I'm an "okay" fit for Sales) in Europe/Singapore/US. OR continuing to a PhD (which is why Oxford is my dream school)
I'd be grateful for any thoughts at all. Thanks guys!
