GMAT OR GRE for MS Finance

Question

Hi,

I am planing to apply Ms Finance for next year. Can you please tell me which one is much more suitable for this program GMAT or Gre?

Hello aynur123 Answer to that question predominantly depends on your school application list. Starting from there you will see if they have preference toward either of the test, usually they don't, but is worth checking school by school. Lets pick few good schools randomly from US and Europe. For Berkeley MFE-Master in Financial Engineering either GMAT or GRE is accepted. For Columbia Master of Science in Financial Economics again either GMAT or GRE is accepted. For MIT Sloan Master of Finance is stated that they accept both the GMAT and GRE test results and have no preference for one over the other. For LSE either GMAT or GRE is accepted, by GMAT strongly preferred

Means there are some smart people there in admission.

For Cambridge Judge the submission of a GMAT or GRE score is optional

As you can see usually you can choose between them. It is up to you to decide where you can excel on exam. I personally prefer GMAT, that is more business oriented

Hey there,

While most of the MSc finance programs accept both GMAT & GRE, there is a minority of schools like RSM that accept only GMAT.
So check with your target schools for any such criteria.

As far as your preference is concerned,go for the one where you think you can get the best score, schools dont really give preference to one over the other.

Most schools accept both, but the GMAT is the de facto test for any program associated with a business school. The GRE is accepted by most through so except for a rare exception, you should be fine.

If you are a foreign student, the GMAT is usually "easier" since it focuses more on math than English. GRE is the reverse.

Take both tests from prep books. See which gives you a better score.

Generally, it is said that Verbal section of the GRE is harder than the GMAT. So foreigners score better in Verbal on the GMAT than the GRE (as there are fewer native English speaking Literature majors taking the GMAT). Therefore taking the GMAT can help foreign applicant look less lopsided.

As far as my son was concerned, he took the GRE as a sophomore since his college required a minimum 160 Q for a dual BS/MS in Finance or Economics Program. Later he changed his mind about pursuing the dual degree and used the same score to get into the MSF at UT Austin. He didn’t really think it was important to retake the GRE to get a higher score or take the GMAT because it was preferred by b schools etc.

Does anyone know whether adcoms in grad business schools are made up of mostly professors and faculty or admissions personnel?
