Ok I’d say avoid working in France at least not in the beginning of your career doubly so because you’re already pursuing a bachelor in London. The culture in Finance is tough to begin with, combined with the old school management culture in France it’s really not that fulfilling. Not saying that it’s the case everywhere. Start up jobs are usually great in France, same as in other types of industries. Finance French environment is just too old school (top many sex jokes, 0 diversity, toxic environment) and even French finance aspirants almost all dream to go to London. Brexit didn’t change things a lot, don’t worry they still hire Europeans I get emails from recruiters every week. The salary is also higher there. ESSEC is a great school, I would personally apply for the MiF and secure a summer internship afterwards instead of doing 2 years of MiM.

Are you from France? Do you want to live in France ? Anyway if you want to work in Finance it’s better NOT to work in France. Having a MiM myself, I’d say go with the MiF it’s easier to get in and you’ll be in a better position abroad for finance jobs (yes I’m talking bulge bracket banks PE etc.) good luck.

I am from France but don’t necessarily want to work in France in the future, ideally I would love to go back to London after my master as I am currently pursuing my bachelor degree in London but again same problem for job in finance with the brexit …

i am just a bit worried and want to keep most of my options open

Why would you say that France is not a great place to be in finance ?

Thank you so much for your answer!

Hi everyone,

I really need your help,

I am about to send my applications to pursue a master's degree. However, I am really between the MiF and the MiM at ESSEC. Indeed, after contacting many students there from different backgrounds, I am still confused.

Indeed, in France, the traditional route seems to be the MiM - Grande école, it is said to be the most renowned and legitimate route. I have also heard that for potential employers (such as Top tier consultancy firms) it is very important to have a Grande école and that any other MSc like finance are not as legitimate.

On the other hand, I think that abroad there is no difference between the MiF and MiM, but could someone tell me if I decide to pursue the MiF knowing that I want to specialize in finance at some point (which I can also do in the MiM thanks to options), do you think I would be closing myself off to potential opportunities in France?

Hey Louisemlz, MiF and MiM both are great degrees and graduating from ESSEC with a degree in MiM or MiF is cherry on the top as ESSEC is considered among the top 3 universities for MiM and ranks second in France.
MiM is focused more on management and business sectors but you will get a variety of electives to choose from, whereas MiF program focuses completely on finance sectors.
If you choose to pursue a career in finance you can do that with a degree in MiM as well.
MiM is a generalised degree and will keep your options open, and MiF narrows it down to one field. If you want to keep your options open I would recommend you to go for MiM as you can pursue a finance career after MiM as well.
Plus there are other parameters to keep in consideration while selecting your course.
