Which of the following most logically completes the passage?
The figures in portraits by the spanish painter El Greco(1514-1614) are systematically elonged. In Il Greco`s time.the intentional distortion of human figures was unprecedented in European painting.Consequently, some critics have suggested that El greco had an astigmatism , a type of visual impairment, that resulted in people appearing to him in the distorted way that is characteristic of his paintings. However, this suggestion can not be the explanation,because_
(A)several twentieth-century artists have consciously adopted from El Greco`s paintings the systematic elongation of the human form
(B)some people do have elongated bodies somewhat like those depicted in El Greco`s portraits
(C)If El Greco had an astigmatism, then relative to how people looked to him, the elongated figures in his paintings would have appeared to him to be distorted
(D)even if El Greco had an astigmatism, there would have been no correction for it available in the period in which he lived
(E)there were non -European artists, even in El Greco`s time, who included their works human figures that were intentionally distorted.
the answer is c.but i am not understanding why its c and why its not e.explain plz...........
To understand this, take an example.
Say you are wearing funny glasses. When you wear them, they change your color perception. When you see a red object, it appears blue. when you see a blue object, it appears green etc
Say, you see a red apple. It appears blue to you. You want to paint it so you take out your paints. In which paint will you dip your brush? Red or blue? You will dip your brush in red paint because it appears blue to you. The blue paint actually appears green to you! When you make an apple, it appears blue to you (just like the actual apple appears to you) but to people who are not wearing funny glasses, it appears red only (i.e. just like the actual apple appears to them).
The point is that with the glasses, your perception is the same with everything. Now, if instead, you were wearing glasses that make people appear long, even in your painting when you make them normal, they will appear long to you (i.e. the way they appear to you). If you make them extra long, they were appear much longer in your painting than they do to you otherwise. This is what (C) says. If he had astigmatism, he would still have drawn normal people only since even in his drawings, they would have appeared long to him. Had he drawn them long, he would have seen them even longer and hence, distorted.
(E) is incorrect. You have to give a reason why astigmatism cannot be the explanation "However, this suggestion can not be the explanation,because_"
You don't have to give another possible reason. You have to say why astigmatism cannot be responsible. What else could be responsible is not our business in this sentence.
