Over many years,i have used the word 'rather' without perfectly knowing what effect it has on meaning in different sentences..what would be the meaning of the sentence,"i would rather you meet me today"? Please also help me out with some other ecletic examples of sentences that use rather but convey different meaning from one another..thanks in advance.
Be aware of the phrase "but rather"
as in "Alexis believes that the decision to take out loans should not lie with the company's management team, but rather lie with the company's board of directors."

So instead of X, you are pointing your attention to Y.
