GMAT preparation : my exam in Nov 1st week

Question

Hi..
I have some doubts regarding the exam.
I wrote Common Admission Test (admission into IIM's in India) and have been studying the material from along time.
Will it b sufficient for gmat ?
and I ordered a OG-13 and what are the books I should follow to score as high as high as 780-790..

I am practicing sped maths techniques and RC passages to increase my speed and accuracy..
need suggestions urgently..
do help me out

You need to check out the DS questions and try a couple of practice tests (we have a free test on our website: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/free-gm ... tice-test/). You can also try one Official prep test on mba.com. You will know whether you need to work more based on the scores you obtain in these tests.

I think your case is a bit similar yet different from me.

I wrote CAT in 2007 and scored 99.98 percentile. I wrote GMAT in February this year and with one week of preparation, I scored 770.

For you, I think even more important than my actual GMAT score should be my first GMATPrep score. Last year, I thought of looking at GMAT and the first thing I did was that I downloaded the official GMATPrep software and gave the test, without any preparations and without even knowing much about the test itself. Also, you can see that it had been 5 years since I gave CAT. Nevertheless, I scored 760.

So, the point I am trying to make here is that if you have a very good percentile in CAT (which I think would be applicable in your case given the GMAT score you are targeting), then it means that you have sound fundamentals in place. Secondly, GMAT is much better a test of your fundamentals than CAT. So, if your fundamentals are good, then your probability of scoring high on GMAT is very high.

So, for you, I would suggest that you first download the GMATPrep software and give a mock test. By doing this, you'll be able to figure out where you stand against your target score and also in which particular areas in verbal and quant do you need to practice.

Once you are done with that, I think if you do even just the official questions, it should be sufficient. You have already purchased OG13. There are other official books for quant and verbal sections i.e. Quant review and Verbal Review Edition 2. In addition, you can purchase extra question bank in GMATPRep software. So, you'll have more than 2000 official questions to solve and learn from.

 Is the level of CAT (for IIM's) and GMAT the same ?
With regard to Quant and Verbal..individually..

Quant in CAT is difficult than quant in GMAT Verbal in GMAT is difficult than verbal in CAT I think you'll appreciate this much better when you give a mock GMAT

They are two very different tests.

GMAT Quant is based on very simple concepts - you don't need to know more than a third of formulas you require for CAT. It is alright if you have forgotten your Geometry as long as you remember the basic things. You need to *know* few things. But the high level questions in GMAT are tricky. You need to know those few things really really well. Some questions will, so to say, get to you. When you read the explanation, you will want to pull your hair out since of course it is simple and you *should have* seen it. Sometimes, DS questions will trip you since they require you to consider all scenarios. The lower level questions (i.e. less than 700-750 level) will be cakewalk if you know your basics well. (Assuming you performed decently on CAT.)

Again, GMAT Verbal is different from CAT Verbal. In my opinion, what really will decide how easy or hard questions you get is the adaptive format of GMAT. CAT is not adaptive and hence is simpler. You will get harder and harder questions on GMAT if you perform well. So to start out, the Verbal might be easier than CAT verbal but if you do well, it will get tougher. Also, GMAT is very logic and reasoning based. After GMAT, I feel CAT questions are cumbersome; they are not *fun*. The way you feel when you see CAT questions after taking IIT entrance!

@gsmvaqt please don't burden yourself with tons of books. GMAT is about many things but it is definitely about reading a lot of things. OG questions in verbal are very standard and up to the mark. All kind of concepts those are tested on the GMAT are exclusively covered in OG. for theory MGMAT books are pretty good and standard. I feel doing these religiously for 3 months should give you a good edge. 
P.s I am just another student and not an expert.
