This evening I decided to start my preparation for GMAT. Checked out the exam pattern and other details. I took the diagnostic test without any prep and scored 590 (Q44, V29) Can someone suggest me how to go about from here and when is a good time to take the actual test, if i plan to join a good bschool next year? Will I be realistic if I set a target of 700+ thanks

Plenty of people have started at much lower than a 590 and have scored int he 700's, so to answer your question, yes that is a realistic target. Aside from that, I think there's plenty of information on this forum about how to get started. I'd suggest looking at some of BB and Bunuel's top posts, that's always a good starting point.
It's very possible to go from 590 into the 700s. It will require lots of effort over several months to climb that far. But, if you put forth a lot of effort, whether it be in the form of personal study or getting help from a prep company, and you have a history of good performance of exams, you should feel confident that you can be successful on the GMAT.
