Hi.

I am fairly new to GMATClub and I have already started noticing an increase in my motivation levels towards taking the exam again.

I took the GMAT in October 2013 and scored 600 (Q42,V30). This was a huge disappointment because in the month leading to the exam, I scored >650 in all the mock tests (including MGMAT which everyone claims is tougher) Two days before the final exam, I took a GMATPrep test and score a 700.

While my Quant score was not very different from what I'd score, my verbal was shockingly low as compared to that in the mocks.

After that I got busy with other things, and for a lot of different reasons, decided against taking the GMAT at that time.

I am now planning to take in again, hopefully in 3 months and I am determined to score 700 or higher. I don't know if thats a realistic hope or I am simply being wishful, but I am aiming to apply to a lot of competitive schools where only a good score will take me where I need to be.

I have the following resources:
OG 13th Edition
MGMAT guides
Magoosh Premium ( the one with 1 year access)

I need help in terms of how I should proceed. One area that I have observed as a weak point is that last time I didn’t do the OG as thoroughly as everyone says I should have. So I will definitely address that.

Outside of this any help or advice you may have is really really appreciated!

Thanks!

First up, I will give you a link to a post that explains why people often score less in actual GMAT (especially in Verbal) compared with their scores in Mocks.

Also, 600 to 700 in 3 months is not a tall order. Obviously, you will need to work on both Quant and Verbal.

For Quant, you will need to focus on two things:

Advanced Concepts - Your basic concepts are all in place but what about advance applications of these concepts? At Q42, you are probably not very comfortable with those. Check out this link: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/categor ... er-wisdom/
The top 3-4 posts are on Advanced Number Properties. This will give you a good idea of the things you need to work on.

Practice - Above the 60th percentile or so, questions are hard less because of the content and more because they look so unique (even though they're testing the same thing). Training yourself to see the familiarity in the obscure is huge, and that happens from seeing a lot of problems.

For Verbal, I don't know whether you worked on the theory (yes, there is theory in Verbal!) but if you didn't last time, you must this time. For CR and RC questions, a discussion on various question types will be hugely beneficial. It gives you an edge on the test maker because you understand what exactly is he trying to test through this question. Most of the times, you will be able to pre-think the answer and then it is just a matter of looking it up in the options.
In SC, other than grammar, reasoning plays a very important role. A correct SC sentence is not just grammatically correct but also leaves no doubt in the reader's mind about the intent of the author. Developing a strategy and practicing it on a lot of questions will be required to improve your score significantly.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.

The links seem very helpful. I will be reviewing them in further detail.

Thanks!
