Issue Task:
Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition.
Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.
Essay:
Free education to students who cannot afford it, by the government, will be an investment in which the returns will exceed all expectation.
First of all, this will be a great move by the government in the sense that some brilliant students who are poor will get access to university studies without the financial burden. They will be able to make something out of their lives and can even go on to become great in their respective fields. This in turn will help society and as an extension, the country. Many more brilliant minds will be able to push the nation forward and keep the competitive edge alive.
This brings me to my second point. The disparity in education between the rich and the poor can be combated. The liberation of university fees will bring the rich and the poor on a level playing field. The only criteria for selection will become academics. This will be a huge step forward in creating a society where the poor can also aspire to be big in life if they have the will and determination to achieve their aim.
Another important advantage will be the access gained by poor students to universities with state of the art facilities, both in terms of education and extra curricular activities. The rich and the affluent students can only access all of these facilities, at university level, as of now. Even though we have many advantages, the main concern will be the allocation of funds for this endeavor. If the government acts upon the free education endeavor, many poor students will aspire to go for university education. This might create a shortage of funds for the government since university education is expensive. However, this can be overcome by strategic planning.
If the government implements a free education policy for poor students, it will be the best news for the country. It will create an opportunity for the poor students to exercise their mind in the right direction and in turn aid the progress of the society and as an extension, the country.
