Hi,
I've co-founded a tech company ( not yet released ) -- worked on it for
more than a year, but left it as things weren't going as expected. Was mainly working with a friend of mine ( also, the founder of my startup ). Including the tech startup -- I have about 3.5 years of experience.
My question is how much value does a tech startup have?
Will my work there count as work experience? ( Since its a start up, no real credible proof of employment -- only code check in's and a website to show for )
I know where I went wrong with my startup and hope to avoid such trivial mistake and learn how to tackle starting a company in a better way than my 1st attempt. Hence,want to get into a business school -- consulting/marketing.
But, uncertain on how Business schools will look @ startup experience. Will it be treated as no experience or actual work experience. Especially, since I have nothing from that company to show as proof except code written and a website hosted. Of course my founder will vouch for my work but that about it. Its not like a big shot company giving employment proof. Will they doubt my work/experience ?
With the current profile ( given below ), what chances do I or any entrepreneur for that matter have?
background info -->
Worked In the IT field for - 6 months
Quit to start my company - 12months
Cashed out, joined my previous company to sustain myself - 16months
Quit again to concentrate on my startup -- 5 months
Quit the startup as things weren't going anywhere ( Disagreements with the founder ) and freelanced ( web - developer ) for sometime - 4 months
Total -- 43 months ( ~ 3.5 years experience )
Now, since the past 3months have been preparing ( not working anywhere ) for Gmat, got a lousy score of 640 ( Q47/ V29 ). Pushed myself to giving it once more. So, planning on taking it this month end.
The colleges that i"m looking for are mostly 1 year colleges ( and less expensive one's as I want to get back into the startup domain -- by clearing my loans ). So, the colleges of interest are -->
1 year
* SDA Bocconi
* IE Business school ( which also endorses entrepreneurship )
* HEC paris ( might not be 12 or 16 months so )
* Kellog ( a long shot considering the competition and the fee - almost 115,000$)
2 year ( applying anyways -- might consider if I get a good financial aid )
* Brigham Young ( Marriott ) -- Tier 2 college with a low fee ( compared to others ) and a Avg Gmat range which I can aim for.
* Ross business school -- Good acceptance rate and good ranking too.
Overreaching / or is it achievable?
* Duke
* Fuqua
* Darden
* Tuck
* Yale
I understand that my score is less and I need at least 680+ to get into the overreaching schools I've mentioned above. But, my real question is -- with 3.5 years experience (mix of startup and regular job ) and with primary interest in Marketing/Consulting, what chances do I have in the above mentioned schools ( with say a 680+/700+ score, which I hope to achieve ) ??
Thanks,
Vivek
