Hi,
I had completed Math preparation few months back and then put my GMAT plans on hold. Ive been preparing for the GMAT for a month and am confident of my math concepts and PS abilities.
The issue that I am facing is that while I conceptually know how to solve questions, I am making errors during simplification.
The frustrating part is that this simplification is of a level that I studied in high school in, probably, 8th grade and was better at even tougher questions once. While I solve all questions under timed conditions the level of difficulty...rather, simplicity...still can't be justified by 'time pressure'.
Eg. 120/P - 10 = 120/(P+1)
While simplifying, after clearing the brackets and cancelling equal terms I divided by 10 throughout; however, I missed that for 1 term.
Another example from another question is - I wrote 25/227 on one line and in the next step I wrote 225/227
These are silly mistakes but can't be afforded on the GMAT. I have 75 days to go and plan to spend 10-15 mins everyday simply practicing basic simplification (not necessarily specific to GMAT questions)
Could you please recommend (1) where can I find such material and (2) any other suggestions on how to eliminate such score busting errors. Thanks.
Dear
varuncontiki,
I'm happy to respond.
First of all, I will suggest that you read this blog:
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/careless-m ... gmat-math/I suspect that what I call "Case III" in that article may be pertinent to you, and while daily practice will help, there are other steps you can take that would help much more.
Now, for practice problems, you might actually go out and get some arithmetic drill books designed for grade school students: you could probably find some used for very low prices. That would certainly be one place to find a treasure-trove of such problems. You might also buy some cheap used GMAT or GRE practice books --- the quality doesn't really matter, as all you want is arithmetic practice.
If you are interested in some higher quality math practice questions, I will also recommend
Magoosh. Here's a 3-month study play you may find helpful:

Magoosh's 800+ practice GMAT questions has its own VE, for accelerated learning. This sort of instant feedback can be one important tool in helping you to be more mindful about these mistakes.
I hope all this helps.
