It's definitely not experimental and wasn't last year either. Your IR score will be reported with the rest of the GMAT so take it seriously (shoot for above the median score). If you know where you will apply ask for the schools' expectations for IR.

Kyle, Do you think getting an 8 will carry much weight when an app is reviewed? Or is it more of a check the box type of thing.

I agree.

As a potential MBA student who wants to become CEO one day, you need to prove that you are able to read and interpret complex graphs, tables and other statistics.

Go for a high score here and prepare for this test part. It will not look great if you have a 700+ score but failed the IR part...

Scoring an 8 will definitely look good on your application, but it's not going to outweigh your general score (200-800). If you are looking to go into consulting or banking, that kind of score will be very handy not only for applications to business schools but also for jobs...
