Are private tutoring sessions worth it?

Question

I was inquiring about some private tutoring and one person told me she charges $40/hr for one on one tutoring. I thought to myself "how much can I really learn in an hour that I can't already learn via the lessons I paid for using Magoosh?"

So here I am... for those who tried private tutoring, was it worth it? I just don't think an hour is quite enough time and $40/hr is quite a lot for a broke college student, LOL. :shock:

The main advantage of the private tutoring is personal attention and customization of your plan/study schedule. You get the best ROI on your time and technically would improve the fastest as you would constantly work through your weaknesses at your pace (fast or slow). However, it is probably the most expensive route since you are not sharing the cost of that instructor time with anyone. In a Magoosh online course, you are sharing it with thousands; with a MGMAT in-person class, you are sharing it with a dozen folks, and here you are paying all 100% of it. Tutoring is usually for the most time-sensitive folks or those who want that degree of personaliazation or if you have tried other cheaper options and they have failed...

P.S. $40/hr is cheap! MGMAT and Veritas Prep charge $200-250 per hour.... so keep that in mind :-)

Hi hopelessgrad,

Tutoring may or may not help you with your "problems", but since you haven't defined them, there's no way to know for sure. To that end, I'm hoping that you can answer a few questions:

1) How long have you been studying?
2) What resources have you been using?
3) How have you been scoring on your practice CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?

The GMAT is a predictable, standardized Test, so you CAN train to score at a high level. You just need to find the proper combination of resources and tactics to help you get there. Whether a tutor is a necessary part of that or not is debatable.

Private tutoring can be immensely helpful. If that tutor is good, then $40/hr is a bargain. A good tutor should be able to identify your weaknesses and help you overcome them. Certainly, you can study on your own, but the whole point of hiring a tutor is to gain efficiency and speed in your preparation.
