Hello,
I am brand new to these forums (just signed up a minute ago) and am wondering what your thoughts are about a possible idea I had for taking the GMAT.
My main question is whether it might be worthwhile for me to register to take the GMAT once as a practice, cancel the score, and then take it "for-real" a month later. I just decided this week to apply to MBA school for this fall and am on a very tight schedule to take the GMAT and do my application.
The three questions I have are:
1) Would this be worth doing since I will get a feel for taking the exam under real test conditions and be able to get a general idea of how I'd currently do?
2) If I cancel the score on the test, can I still see what the score would have been?
3) Might a C on my GMAT record in some way count against me in the eyes of the schools I am applying to?
As background, my situation is this:
- I just decided (very last minute) to apply to two selective part-time MBA programs for Fall 2015 (UCLA Anderson, Berkeley Haas).
- The application deadlines for the two schools I am applying to are in mid-March and mid-April.
- As of yet, I have done very little GMAT preparation, and am scrambling to study and get prepared.
- As I currently understand it, the schools only look at your highest GMAT score (I need to verify and double-verify this).
Given these points, I am wondering if it would be worth it to:
- Register for the GMAT in mid-February (there appear to be a few openings)
- Spend a week cramming as much as I can
- Take the test "cold" as a practice run
- Cancel the score for that test
- Take the test "for real" in mid-March and mid-April just before the deadlines for each of the two schools (as I understand it, you can take the test every 31 days 5 times per year)
Note that, with respect to this approach, I am not overly concerned about paying the extra registration fee or taking the time off to do the practice exam. However, if it's likely to be a complete waste of time and money, I won't bother.
Thank you in advance for your advice.
