Hi ineed600,

Yikes - sorry to hear that. Actually, your verbal was pretty good- but that drop in quant looks unexpected. How did you feel while you were taking the test? Quant comes first -- so it seems you were doing better towards the end of the exam. Did you feel unfocused towards the beginning?

Even so, throughout your practice tests, quant seems to consistently be your weaker area. I would recommend that you really focus on the easy/medium questions for quant. Things like algebra, fractions, geometry, exponents, and number properties. Generally speaking, they can only test you on these concepts in so many ways. Just understand the various angles that they can test you on - and you should be that much more prepared.

That is the approach we take -- we take a core question -- and explain our answer. Then we take that same question with a slight variation and we look at how that changes the question. You may have studied and looked at a lot of questions -- but that "a ha" moment hasn't quite appeared because sometimes you get the right answer -- perhaps because you are lucky -- without really understanding what's going on.

When you take another look at OG math questions, take a look at this sample video and compare with how you are approaching math questions:

Good luck!

Hi, first of all thank you for your time.

t's really hard for me to get focused immediately once the test starts. But after I work on 2 - 3 questions I'm really focused and it was like that even on test day.
Can you suggest me some material where to do so? Or it will be useful anyways to go through the manhattan questions for a second time?

Do you think I can do this improvement in 3 weeks?

Hi Ineed600,

When a Test Taker's scores drop significantly on Test Day, the likely "reason" is either that the practice was unrealistic or something about Test Day was so surprising as to throw off the Test Taker's performance.

I have a few questions about your practice CATs, since they offer the greatest point for comparison:

1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take the CATs at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
3) Did you take your CATs at home?
4) Did you do anything while you took your CATs that would be considered unrealistic (skipping sections, pausing the Test, listening to music, eating/drinking, etc.)?

5) How long was the ride to the Testing Center?
6) What did you do during the two 8-minute breaks?

As it stands, you're relatively close to scoring 600+ right now. The GMAT gives you the score that you EARN though, so to hit your goals, you have to put in the necessary work to earn those points.

Hi Rich, thank you for taking the time to help me out.

1) No, the program I want to apply to doesn't ask for Essay and IR, so I skipped this parts. But I did every time Q + V on my CATS.
2) Yes, 9 am. I feel more focused in the morning.
3) Yes, I take them at home alone without anything disturbing me.
4) As I said, I just skipped Essay and IR because I don't need them. I tried to simulate the real test conditions.
5) It's so far from my city that I had to book an hotel the night before the test and sleep over. The commute from the hotel was 15 minutes.
6) I went to the bathroom, drank some water and I had a walk in the test center garden.

Am I relatively close? My score were down 10 points from my last GMAT, and now I need an improvement of 60 points. It looks like really hard to me but maybe I just need to find some hope.
Do you think it's possible to have this kind of improvement in 3 weeks? How would you do? I
I can post more details on my cats if you need them to evaluate my situation.

Hi Ineed600,

The travel and sleeping in a 'strange' bed could very well have impacted your performance enough to contribute to the score drop. These types of details matter and need to be accounted for. Since you can't change this aspect of Test Day, we'll just have to work around it. Your Verbal Score was so much stronger than your Quant score that you have a greater opportunity to pick up the missing points that you're looking for in the Quant section. You could conceivably get all of those points from the Verbal section, although you'd have to hone all of those Verbal skills to a really high degree.

How much study time do you have in the next 3 weeks?

I think it would be better for me to improve my quant score, it's really embarrassing. Even if I get 600 with a 27 in quant, it won't be a success.
Also I think it would be easier to increase a low score in quant, instead of increasing an average verbal score.

Rich, I want this 600 really badly otherwise I wouldn't t spend other 700euro (Gmat + Hotel + Flight) for the third time. I canceled everything I had to do in the next 3 weeks. If I need to study 10 hours a day, I will. The problem is that I'm feeling like wasting my time in those days cause I don't really know what to do so I'm just going through the material again without any specific plan.

I also have two more CAT but I don't know if I should take them, they didn't have any predicting use last time.

Thank you again for your time, I really appreciate.

Hi Ineed600,

I think that you have the proper overall perspective considering that you're dealing with a less-than-ideal situation. Focusing on your Quant Score is likely the best overall option, but you need a more focused plan than you currently have. With 3 weeks, I suggest that you use the EMPOWERgmat Quant Score Booster. Most of our clients are able to complete that program in 2-4 weeks, so it should fit your timeline. It has the added benefit of focusing on the most valuable content and tactics, while removing the rarer categories that won't really impact your score. You'll still have to work hard and practice some new tactics, but it's helped many of clients to quickly raise their Quant Scores, so I think that it will help you too.

If you have any additional questions, then feel free to contact me directly.

Hi Ineed600!

I understand your frustration with quant. However, a lot can be done in 3 week so don't give up! I sent you a PM with a couple ideas.

Best of luck!

Ben
