Hi aosorionl,

The 'goal' of spending less than 2 minutes per question in the Quant question is silly and impractical. Certain questions can be solved relatively quickly (in less than a minute), while others are designed to take 3 minutes to solve (and that's if you KNOW what you're doing). The scoring algorithm does NOT factor in how much time you take to solve an individual question, so that should not concern you. What SHOULD concern you is your overall efficiency - are you approaching each prompt in the most efficient way possible? Is "your way" of answering a question the 'fastest' way? Are you answering ALL of the questions in each section? Etc.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

The exam scores each question solely as a binary event. Right or wrong. Time only factors in when you consider finishing the exam. There is a SEVERE penalty for not finishing...

Hope that helps.
Thanks! All clear!

Hi

Does the GMAT penalize my score if I spend more than 2 minutes per question?

What I mean is for example If I spend 4 minutes in question 1, 1 minute in question 2, and 1 minutes in question 3?

Or it really doesn't matter, just finish in time.

Thank you very much!

Hi aosorionl,

The GMAT doesn't penalize you on time. Your exam is only scored on correct/incorrect answers (and points aren't deducted for guesses if they're correct guesses). Spending more time on some questions and less on others is very normal (within a certain range). It often depends on the difficulty of the question. Some just take longer to solve than others. That's not the case if you're taking 5 minutes on a quantitative question and 30 seconds on the rest in the same section. Spending too much or too little time on a question might reflect in the former case, an inability to solve the question and in the latter, a careless mistake. The range should be a bit more narrow to reflect how much time you need to answer the question accurately. Your task is to remain within the time constraint but also work slowly enough to achieve maximum accuracy.

I hope that helps!

Hey aosorionl,

In case you haven't seen, the GMAT Timer is just one of many features we already have in the Practice Pill Platform: www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-test/

You can time yourself for each question, get a video explanation explained the GMAT PILL way, and post questions / get answers to your questions.

Best of luck!

Everyone above is of course correct that you are not scored directly on timing. However, I'd like to caution you that a 3+ minute problem is typically one you're getting wrong, and even if you get it right, there are potential problems. First, you may run out of time later (this is one of the most common problems in all of test-taking) and second, you may still get zero credit! Many of the problems on the official test are experimental and do nothing for your score, so it's not wise to knock yourself out on any one problem at the expense of others. You are best served by keeping your time fairly consistent. Certainly, some problems will take longer than others, but I can tell you from years of looking at people's test timing that it's a very rare student who can spend 3 minutes on many of the problems without running into trouble at the end and reducing their score.
