I took 7 mocks before the exam in fully timed conditions. My mock scores are below:

GMATPrep 1 - 710(Q49, V37) (May 2015)
GMATPrep 2 - 730(Q49, V40) (1 week before the exam)
The scores of the 5 manhattan mocks I gave ranged between 590-620

What I think went wrong:
I need more practice for Verbal(I am a non native English speaker)
I finished the Verbal section on time(I probably spent too little time on each question)
I didn't maintain an error log

Can someone please help me understand what went wrong and also suggest some good resources for Verbal practice.

Thanks for reading this post
Shravanthi
Were the GMATPrep questions "fresh" (or had you already seen some of them before)?

1. You might need more practice, but your being a non-native speaker won't have anything to do with it. Most native speakers will struggle to get a V40 (or even a V37) on the GMATPrep.
2. I'm confused by this one. How is finishing verbal on time a bad thing :)
3. I agree with this one. Error logs are very useful.

Do try to get the exam pack 1 and the question pack 1. That'll give you a little more material for both practice and testing.

Also, I've seen people do well on the GMATPrep and then get significantly lower scores on the actual GMAT. For what it's worth, most of them bounce back and get a higher score on retaking the GMAT. The GMATPrep practice tests are quite robust and well made. Your actual GMAT verbal score should be much higher than 27. I think part of it is going to be just taking the exam again.

Thanks Ajitesh for the reply. I will take the exam pack and question pack as suggested.

The first GMATPrep i took was after finishing the OG and Manhattan strategy guides(only). So i dont think I had already seen them before.
In the 2nd GMATPrep i saw a couple of questions that were already covered in the egmat course. I intentionally skipped them as i didnt want that to inflate my score.
I considered finishing on time a bad thing as i had to guess atleast 3-4 questions in verbal while taking the mocks.

Hi shravanthim,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. Your practice CAT scores clearly show that you're capable of scoring at a much higher level. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day.

If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once?

It's possible that you just had a "bad day"; but if we can figure all of this out quickly, then you shouldn't wait too long to retest.

Thanks Rich, for the reply.

1) I took GMATPrep 1 and a Manhattan mock without AWA and IR. The rest were full length tests.
2) Yes, I took them at home on my study table.
3) Yes, all the mocks i started at 10 AM in the morning and my actual exam was at 9AM.
4) I have not paused the GMATPrep tests. GMATPrep 1 was taken without AWA and IR and GMATPrep 2 was fully simulated with the 8 minute break.
I paused while taking the Quant section of Manhattan mocks as some of the problems were too challenging and it was hard to give up.
5) No, I have not taken any CAT more than once.

I could never figure out why i was not able to score beyond 620 in the Manhattan mocks. Also, the 100+ point difference between the average Manhattan and GMATprep mocks was always confusing.

If that is the case, perhaps you need to work on your pacing as well. Guessing can be useful, but it'd be great if you could improve your speed before the next attempt.

Looking forward to your next debrief :-D

Hi Shravanthi,

The extra information that you've provided is helpful - it points out some of the ways that your practice was NOT realistic. The GMAT is a specific 'event' which you CAN train for, but the more that your practice deviates from what you'll face on Test Day, the more likely the results are to be "off."

Since you directly referenced the two GMAC CATs, I'll focus on those:

1) GMATPrep1 - Not taking the entire CAT. By skipping the Essay and IR sections, you essentially turned a 4-hour Test into a 2.5 hour long Test. In these situations, 'shorter' almost always means 'easier' (and NOT realistic).
2) Taking the CATs at home. Working in a familiar, informal setting is NOT what you face on Test Day.
3) GMATPrep2 - Seeing repeat questions is also NOT realistic. No matter how you might have tried to behave differently, there is no way to 'counter-act' seeing questions that you've already answered. Beyond the likely impact of a score increase, you didn't have to deal with the same type of natural stresses, fatigue and endurance issues that you normally would face on the Official GMAT.

Thankfully, these issues can be dealt with if you just take your CATs in a more realistic way. Using your Official Score as a 'gauge', you still have some serious work to do to raise your score 100+ points. Since you've used some resources already, you might need to invest in some new resources. Beyond the need for some new Verbal materials, you also have the potential to pick up some points in the Quant section, so some extra work in that area is also warranted.

Have you scheduled your next GMAT yet?
When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Hi guys

I gave my GMAT 15 days ago and scored a 610(Q47, v27). I was targeting a 700+ and was devastated by my score.

Prep time : 4 months(Devoted at least 4 hours a day)

The resources I used for my prep are below:

Verbal

Manhattan guides SC, CR, RC
eGMAT Verbal online course(religiously followed it, took notes etc.)
OG
OG verbal review(I solved this one after I finished the eGMAT course with 70-75% accuracy in all the sections)

Quant

Manhattan strategy guides
OG
OG quant review
Kaplan 800
Kaplan Premier
Advanced GMAT Quant

My GMAT experience:

I reached the test centre 30 mins early and was not nervous. The AWA section went well but I unknowingly spend 12 minutes on the first IR question. I froze when I looked at the time. I panicked for 2-3 mins but regained my composure and tried to look for easy questions so that I at least get 4 of them right. I took the break and told myself to not get disheartened by the IR. I had some fruits and felt a lot better. I finished the Quant and verbal sections with a minute to spare in both. I guessed one question in each section.

I was shocked on seeing my score and cancelled it. I bought the ESR and leant that I scored low on RC and SC, and CR was average.

What I think went wrong:
I need more practice for Verbal(I am a non native English speaker)
I finished the Verbal section on time(I probably spent too little time on each question)
I didn't maintain an error log

Can someone please help me understand what went wrong and also suggest some good resources for Verbal practice.

Hey Shravanthi,

Everything matters in GMAT - your error log, your deviations in the practice tests, your time management etc but what matters the most is your basic conceptual understanding. No small tweaking will make a big change till you don't invest quality time in building your fundamentals. The actual GMAT showed you that there are some gaps. Focus on those. Learn how to tackle RC questions, how to actively look for errors in SC, how to question whether the options are logical etc.

Hi Rich

Thank you for the valuable suggestions. I would schedule my GMAT after a good 2-3 month prep to improve my score by a 100 points.

Thanks Karishma, for your suggestions.

I will keep an error log and also try to fill the gaps in fundamentals.
