Hi all,

I did my GMAT this morning and scored 630 q47 v30. In all my practice tests my verbal has new in the 37-40 range while quant has been in the 47-48 range. I can’t explain how I did so poorly in my verbal section. My CR was really strong when I started revising 2 months ago but felt that it was declining as I got closer to exam date, not sure how that is possible. I also got few really difficult RC scientific passages. I want to redo the GMAT and get 700+

I’m lost for words as how I’ve scored so poorly in verbal, what can I do to make sure my verbal is strong when I retake the GMAT? And how long do you think I should wait before doing another exam?

Thanks

Hi,

Can you give more info on which materials and prep test did you use to prepare before exam ?

Did you felt particularly nervous on exam or didn't had enough sleep ?

Are you a morning person and did you took mocks in the morning or at some other time ?

Thanks for your reply.

I used manhattan for quant and SC. Power score for CR. I went through all OG questions for quant and SC and did the default and both exam pack 1 and 2. My mocks were consistently around 690-700 Mark. Quant never really moved away from 47 but verbal was getting stronger, improving from 34’s to 41 in the last mock I did before the exam date. That’s why I was so shocked when I saw my verbal score. I thought I messed up quant as I did that first on the exam, so I had few seconds spent thinking about bad quant performance during my verbal part of the exam but that was only brief and I did move past it so I don’t want to use that as an excuse. I’m waiting until I can see the enhanced report to see where it went wrong.

One surprising thing was my CR was getting worse as I got closer to exam. One of the earlier mocks, I was hitting 49-50 on the CR split but closer to exam it went drastically down. My incorrect CR questions went from 1-2 to 5-6.

Exam was at 10am so not too early and I am an early person so don’t think that impacted it.
In verbal I saw about 5 RC- 2 of them were really long 3 paragraph scientific one. I’m not usually good with science ones, my thought is I messed that up majorly.

Hi
Sorry to hear that your Gmat didn't go well. I suggest to order the ESR. It will be helpful to analyze the sections that brought you down. In order to know the reason for CR score going down, analyze the mistakes the you are making. Is it due to a logical error or misunderstanding of the question stem or any other reason. Revise the error type and strategies of CR. Refer to the Ultimate Verbal Plan from Souvik in the Gmatclub.
Hope it will help.

Hi sumitshrestha,

When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you took your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE (re: in an online forum or in a practice set)?
