I took my first GMAT exam yesterday and scored 80 points lower than my best practice exam score. Because I bombed it so hard, I did 50 questions right after returning from the test center. Yeah, I really did that.
My first GMAT score is 610 with Q44 and V30. I'm not so mad that I got 30 on Verbal, because as a non-native English speaker, I know I have a long way to go there. What really got me it's my Quant score. Four days before the actual exam, I took a Veritas practice test and scored 690 with Q51 and V34. Two days before the actual exam, I took my first GMAT prep practice test and got 660 with Q49 and V31. After reviewing all the incorrect answers on my GMAT Prep practice exam, I concluded that half of the questions that I got wrong in Quant are due to very careless mistakes (i.e. Tom is twice as old as David, but I did the reverse in calculation). I know I'm a Q50-51 person or at least Q49 person, but what the hell went wrong at the actual exam? Did anyone else have such a huge discrepancy between their mock and actual exams?
I found that the actual GMAT quant questions are very wordy and difficult to understand. Sometimes I spent about a minute just to understand what the question is asking (i.e. instead of having a=x, b=y, is a>b? type of question, my actual GMAT had a lot questions that are 3 to 4 sentences long). Because of this, I constantly felt like my time is running out. However, I never felt this rushed during practice exams.
I truly believe my current level is around 680 with 31-32 Verbal. I consistently miss about 50-60% of SC and 30-40% of CR questions in the practice exams. I know I can improve my Verbal score substantially with more time and practice. My target score is 740 (10 points above the average of my dream school, yeah I know it's long shot from where I am now). I'm planning to retake it in a month or so (trying to apply schools in round 1), any suggestions on how I maybe able to do this? Anyone has successfully went from 610 to 740 in a short amount of time? What are the best things to do to improve SC and CR?
Please help, I'm a bit desperate here. Thank you so much

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:
When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you took your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE (re: on a prior CAT, in an online forum or in a practice set)?
