https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/2015/1 ... nals-gmat/In the above URL of VERITAS PREP, a que is discussed.
Botanists have proven that if plants
extended laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they will grow slower than do those that are more vertically contained.
(A) extended laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they will grow slower than do
(B) extended laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they will grow slower than
(C) extend laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they grow more slowly than
(D) extend laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they would have grown more slowly than do
(E) extend laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they will grow more slowly than do
The answer given is (C). And the info in the URL also goes on to explain that why "slower" is wrong and "more slowly" is right.
However, if I have to modify the answer options and pose the question as below.
Botanists have proven that if plants
extended laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they will grow slower than do those that are more vertically contained.
(A) extend laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they grow
more slowly than ---
same as (C) above(B) extend laterally beyond the scope of their root system, they grow
slower than -- My modified answer choiceI'd choose (B).
Because the question compares growth of two plants. Plant #1. Plants that extend laterally. Plant #2. Plants that are more vertically contained.
Hence, one plant grows
slower than other. Slower being the comparative adverb form.
I'd only choose (A), if I knew that Plant #2 grows
slowly already. (Maybe given in the question stem or in some way).
And, now Plant #1 grows even more slowly than Plant #2, in that case, Plant #1 grows
more slowly than Plant #2.
This is where I feel
more slowly would have an appropriate usage.
To summarize:
It doesn't make sense to say this: Tortoise moves
more slowly than Lion
Better version would be this: Tortoise moves
slower than Lion
When will I use
more slowly? Male tortoise
moves slowly and female tortoise moves
more slowly than male does
And, since the original question doesn't contain
grow slower, by POE I chose (C). Had it contained an option with
grow slower, that would be correct.
I'd really like to be proven wrong. Please let me know.
