Bombarded by bullets, the troops retreated.
Hi,
Although I do understand grammar in general, I just needed conceptual clarity in terms of grammar nomenclature.
So, for the above sentence, can you please help me understand the below doubt/s. Please also rectify my understanding if incorrect.
1) Presuming the sentence is correct in its structure, here, "Bombarded by bullets" is a participle phrase acting as an adverbial modifier. Logically/Structurally, the phrase is modifying the noun "troops". Simultaneously though, the phrase is also describing the action/verb (retracted; Why did the troops retract - Because they were bombarded by bullets).
But as the rule goes, an adverbial modifier modifies everything but a noun, and if it is indeed modifying the noun "troops", shouldn't it be just a participle phrase acting as an adjective?
I am pretty sure the overlap is just a conceptual confusion that I have. Still, needed more clarity for better understanding.
Thanks in advance.
Regards
