How to improve my accuracy in maths

Question

Hey I started my preprations from 17th July and have been solvig the GMAT OG as per the levels suggested at the back of the book on easy levels I am getting an accuracy of 74-82% in both quant and DS but as soon as I completed the medium and Hard level the accuracy drastically went down to 45-60%. I have not been good at mathmatics since the beginning so I am a bit worried. Also is the OG sufficient enough to get a 700+ score.

Hi Kiwtir,

The OG books are great sources for practice questions, but they're not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. Even the best books are limited in what they can teach you; they also can't force you to approach questions in a certain way and their explanations are often one-sided.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) Have you used any other study materials besides the Official Guide?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

For your reply to the above topic:
1) I study 3-5 hrs a day depending upon the time I have with me.
2) I have previous year OG and some coaching material of the year 2020.
3) I haven't appeared for any tests yet.
4) I am thinking to apply in October.
5) I haven't decided on the colleges I will be choosing the Colleges after my preprations I am thinking to apply in January or else March.

Hi Kiwtir,

If you've been studying consistently for the last month, then you really MUST take a FULL-LENGTH CAT (including the Essay and IR sections) sometime soon. That initial diagnostic CAT is important - it helps to define your strengths and weaknesses and gives you a basis for comparison as you continue to study. Most GMATers are not happy with that first CAT result, but that's not a big deal - the extra months of available study time are there so that you can IMPROVE on this initial practice result.

You can take 2 CATs for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). Make sure to take that CAT in a realistic fashion that matches up with what you will face on Test Day (take the CAT at the same time of day, wear a face-mask, etc.). A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have that initial Score, you should report back here (or you can feel free to PM me directly) and we can discuss the results and how you might best proceed with your studies.

While many folks use the OG for their GMAT prep, they usually do while using other resources as well. In your case, to see what you should do moving forward, you may find it helpful to take a full length practice exam to get a baseline score.
