Hi Gmat experts,

I took my first GMAT attempt a few days ago and scored a shocking 620. While I was scoring 720-750 in mocks, it came as a shock when screen flashed a score of 620 (Q49, V25). After some days of rest, I am thinking to prepare again for my second attempt and need your advice on the same.

1. What is the typical timeline that I should consider for a retake?
2. I am confused whether I should do self study or go with an online/ personal coaching. I have shortlisted a few names but need your opinion on the same.

I have purchased my ESR report and really looking forward for your help in better understanding my prep strategy forward. Please help. Thanks!

Hi GDG,

Sorry about how things went with your GMAT. But do not get disappointed. It's just that you have to identify what went wrong and work towards improving your weak areas. Let me help you with that.

What could be the reason for the low score?

I can only see two reasons for the drastic drop in your score. They are:
  • Test day pressure - It's possible that you might have felt a little tensed and messed up your GMAT. For this to happen your mock scores must be consistent (even the quant and verbal scores have to be consistent). If you feel this is the reason, then I think you should give a couple of mocks to get used to the test environment and give GMAT with a calm mind.
  • Inconsistent application skills - You might have got a little lucky in your mocks and somehow got right answer without using the right methods. GMAT is a test of application of concepts. So, your methods and strategies have to consistent for you to score well on GMAT.

It would be really pre-mature to suggest anything without knowing the complete information. An ESR would definitely help get a few more insights about the possible reason. Once we analyze the ESR, we can come up with the further plan of action. Having said that, I think a zoom conference call would be much better for us to analyze the ESR together as it would be much more interactive and would help me understand your approach of solving questions in a better way. Hi GDG,

I'm sorry to hear about how things went on test day. I'm happy to provide some advice but would like to learn more about your situation with the GMAT. Once you respond to the questions already asked, I can provide some advice. In the meantime, here is a helpful article:

Why Was My GMAT Score Lower Than My Practice Test Scores?
